Top Ten Harry Potter Villains That Are Not Voldemort

toptentuesday2

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature/weekly meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week’s topic is All About The Villains. My list is all about the worst (best?) Harry Potter villains. Yes, I’m that person.

Contains spoilery quotes.

1 & 2. Vernon and Petunia Dursley

Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense. (From Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.)

3. Dolores Umbridge

“I doubt it,” said Sirius. “I know her by reputation and I’m sure she’s no Death Eater -”

“She’s foul enough to be one,” said Harry darkly, and Ron and Hermione nodded vigorously in agreement.

“Yes, but the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters,” said Sirius with a wry smile. “I know she’s a nasty piece of work, though – you should hear Remus talk about her.” (From Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.)

4. Fenrir Greyback

“Do it,” said the stranger standing nearest to Harry, a big, rangy man with matted grey hair and whiskers, whose black Death Eater’s robes looked uncomfortably tight. He had a voice like none that Harry had ever heard: a rasping bark of a voice. Harry could smell a powerful mixture of dirt, sweat and, unmistakeably, of blood coming from him. His filthy hands had long yellowish nails.

“Is that you, Fenrir?” asked Dumbledore. (From Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

5. Bellatrix Lestrange

“Never used an Unforgivable Curse before, have you, boy?” she yelled. She had abandoned her baby voice now. “You need to mean them, Potter! You need to really want to cause pain – to enjoy it – righteous anger won’t hurt me for long – I’ll show you how it is done, shall I? I’ll give you a lesson -” (From Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.)

6. Gellert Grindelwald

The name of Grindelwald is justly famous: in a list of Most Dangerous Dark Wizards of All Time, he would miss out on the top spot only because You-Know-Who arrived, a generation later, to steal his crown. As Grindelwald never extended his campaign of terror to Britain, however, the details of his rise to power are not widely known here. – Rita Skeeter’s “The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore” (From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.)

7 & 8. Amycus and Alecto Carrow

“They do more than teach,” said Neville. “They’re in charge of all discipline. They like punishment, the Carrows.” (From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.)

9. Cornelius Fudge

Harry couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He had always thought of Fudge as a kindly figure, a little blustering, a little pompous, but essentially good-natured. But now a short, angry wizard stood before him, refusing, point-blank, to accept the prospect of disruption in his comfortable and ordered world – to believe that Voldemort could have risen. (From Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

10. Lucius Malfoy

“Lucius, my slippery friend,” he [Voldemort] whispered, halting before him. “I am told that you have not renounced the old ways, though to the world you present a respectable face. You are still ready to take the lead in a spot of Muggle-torture, I believe? Yet you never tried to find me, Lucius … your exploits at the Quidditch World Cup were fun, I daresay … but might not your energies have been better directed towards finding and aiding your master?” (From Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.)

  1. You’ve got to love a Harry Potter villain. You’ve picked some amazing ones. I should’ve put Bellatrix on my list! I love to hate here.

    1. Oh, yes, Lord of the Rings has lots of great villains as well, although they seem to represent a more amorphous evil than the Harry Potter bunch (except Gollum and everyone in The Silmarillion).
